After the coronavirus outbreak, we’ve found that a huge number of businesses have embraced the use of Microsoft Teams and it has become the main way to communicate for many remote workers, reducing the need for phone calls and, ultimately, working as an internal phone system.
Microsoft Teams is a platform for effective communications of all forms. If you're not already familiar with it, Teams is based in Microsoft's Office 365 cloud platform, and is a one-stop shop for instant chat, team collaboration, audio and video meetings and document sharing.
As Teams has become increasingly popular, many of our clients and other businesses have been asking the question, “Can it be used as a full phone system for both internal and external calls?”
…and the answer is, yes it can!
Microsoft Teams has evolved into a modern cloud-based telephony solution using Microsoft 365 Business Voice, which can effectively replace your traditional phone system. It’s worth noting that Teams is also highly competitive in functionality and cost when compared to other modern cloud-based phone systems.

Introducing Microsoft 365 Business Voice
Microsoft 365 Business Voice works within Microsoft Teams, so if you have less than 300 people and an applicable Microsoft 365 subscription, then it could work for your small to medium sized business.
In order to use Microsoft 365 Business Voice you will need to transfer your existing phone numbers to Microsoft. Once you’ve done this, you can build a calling plan to fit your business. As standard, UK users receive 1,200 minutes of domestic calls per user, however at Custard we offer unlimited minutes* for domestic calls per user (just one of the reasons why using us to setup your cloud-based phone system is a great call!)
Microsoft 365 Business Voice is an extremely versatile system that can manage functionality such as welcome messages, auto-attendants, call queues, hunt groups, voicemail and more. It is however worth noting that complex phone setups can be a challenge for most businesses, so it usually worth working with an IT support company to help optimise your setup, as well as be on hand for any additional changes that may be necessary as your business expands.
Why should you use Microsoft Teams as your next phone system?
One of the main benefits of moving to Microsoft 365 Business Voice is the significant savings that can be made, with prices from only £12 per month per user.
As with other Office 365 applications, Teams is constantly on the latest version ensuring the very best security for your business.
An easy add-on
If you already have an Office 365 subscription, then you are part of the way to having Teams as a phone system already, meaning a smooth transition for your employees.
Teams provides the same kind of functionality as a PBX Phone System including call queues, hunt groups, music on hold, auto-attendants, group pickup, number blocking, voicemail and time-based policies.
Lots of choice
There are number of different handset makes and models to choose from including headsets, touch screen phones and conference room equipment, as well as your mobile phone or PC.
Teams is a single unified phone system globally. It can work in the office, at home, on a PC and on a mobile simultaneously.
You can choose from inclusive calling plans for domestic and international calls or a hybrid approach if required.
Works with all other features of Teams as well as Office 365 in general, including email, calendar, SharePoint, document collaboration and team chats.
